Strengthening Solidarity Farming Connections with Palestine
At Feeding Ourselves, we held a session on the situation for farmers and food producers in Palestine. This featured a presentation from Oliver Moore, who visited the West Bank in December 2024, and interventions from Edwin Brookes of the Land Workers Alliance in the UK and Yasmeen El Hasan from Union of Agricultural Work Committees, (UAWC) live from Ramallah.
Edwin initiated a farm twinning project between LWA and UAWC in January, which he spoke about. Yasmeen updated us on the situation since December, regarding the increased pace of settlement expansion, the increased attacks on the northern West Bank, regarding the use of starvation and the attacks on agri-food infrastructure in Gaza .She also introduced the opportunity for volunteer solidarity visits for Autumn/Winter 2025.
Dr. Rupa Marya from the floor added important information regarding her work on tracking attacks on medical personnel and infrastructure, which she will be presenting at the UN late this year.
At the end of the session, activities proposed by participants included:
- Supporting the Stop Gaza Starvation campaign which is food and water relief plus, importantly, supporting farmers in Gaza to repair infrastructure for food production and water supply.
- Also proposed was progressing farm twinnings, whereby farms here and in the West Bank connect up and share knowledge and experiences.
- Progressing solidarity visits was another action that resonated with people – going to the West Bank in Autumn/Winter to bear witness and to help farmers, including with the Olive Harvest.
- Finally, continued support for legislative efforts to limit or ban the sale of Israeli goods into Ireland, in particular regarding the Occupied Territories.
